Virgin Falls Trail: 110-Foot Waterfall Hike Near Sparta, Tennessee
Experience one of Tennessee’s most unique waterfalls at Virgin Falls State Natural Area in Sparta Tn. This spectacular 110-foot waterfall emerges from a cave, cascades over a cliff, and mysteriously vanishes into another cave below—a rare geological phenomenon you won’t find anywhere else.
- Trailhead Parking: Limited; arrive early during peak season
What to Expect: The challenging Virgin Falls hike rewards adventurers with multiple waterfalls including Big Branch Falls, scenic overlooks like Martha’s Pretty Point, and several cave formations. The trail is best hiked after rainfall when water flow is highest, creating a more dramatic display as less water disappears underground.

Important Visitor Information:
- Cave Closures: All caves closed August–May to protect bat populations from white-nose syndrome
- Best Time to Visit: Spring and early summer after rain for peak water flow
- What to Bring: Sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, snacks, and a trail map
- Permits: Backcountry camping requires advance reservation
Perfect for experienced hikers seeking a full-day adventure with stunning waterfall views and unique cave geology.
Good to know info: The 2-mile road (Scott’s Gulf Road) to get to the parking lot is rough, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended, though most 2WD vehicles can make it. Feel free to submit a trail and pictures.
