Discover Cane Creek Falls, the largest waterfall by volume in Fall Creek Falls State Park with an 85-foot drop into a deep plunge pool, which it shares with Rockhouse Falls. This impressive waterfall is accessible via multiple trails and offers excellent swimming opportunities at its base. Located near the Betty Dunn Nature Center, Cane Creek Falls is one of six major waterfalls in Tennessee’s most visited state park. Rockhouse Falls; second-tallest waterfall in Fall Creek Falls State Park at Rockhouse Falls, where Rockhouse Creek spills 125 feet over a plunge waterfall. This stunning waterfall shares a plunge pool with Cane Creek Falls, located just 100 feet away, creating a unique dual-waterfall experience. Despite being one of the park’s six major waterfalls, Rockhouse Falls offers a more secluded and peaceful experience compared to the main attractions. Both of these falls can be seen at the same overlook.

Trail Options:

Nature Center Overlook (Easiest):

  • Distance: Short easy walk from nature center entrance
  • Difficulty: Easy with a couple of steps
  • Hiking Time: 5-10 minutes
  • Features: Quick view of falls from above; not the best vantage point

Gorge Trail to Overlook (Best Views):

  • Distance: 1.0-mile roundtrip from nature center
  • Difficulty: Easy; no extreme elevation changes
  • Hiking Time: 30-45 minutes
  • Features: Spur trail offers clearer, more beautiful perspective of both Cane Creek and Rockhouse Falls; crosses suspension bridge

Cable Trail to Base (Most Adventurous):

  • Distance: 0.3-mile roundtrip
  • Difficulty: Difficult; extremely steep with cable assistance required
  • Hiking Time: 30-60 minutes
  • Elevation Loss/Gain: 125 feet descent on 45-degree slope
  • Features: Best waterfall views; access to swimming hole

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall for optimal water flow; summer for swimming; early morning visits (around 6:30 AM) avoid crowds and provide good lighting Tennessee State Parks
  • What to Bring: Sturdy hiking boots for Cable Trail, swimsuit and towel for swimming, water shoes, plenty of drinking water
  • Safety: Cable Trail isn’t for the faint of heart with loose rocks, very steep areas, and sections requiring climbing; only experienced hikers should attempt
  • Photography: Prepare to get your feet wet for the best pictures; unobstructed shots are hard to come by without getting out in the water Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation
  • Trail Conditions: Cable Trail has slippery areas especially after rain
  • Not Recommended For: Small children, elderly, or anyone uncomfortable with steep exposed terrain on Cable Trail
