Fall Creek Falls Spencer Tn.

Fall Creek Falls Spencer Tn.

Experience the crown jewel of Tennessee at Fall Creek Falls, a breathtaking 256-foot waterfall recognized as the tallest single-plunge, free-falling waterfall east of the Rockies. This iconic waterfall is the namesake of Fall Creek Falls State Park and draws visitors from across the country to witness its spectacular plunge into the gorge below. Don’t miss a spectacular seasonal waterfall plunging 250 feet into Fall Creek Gorge, flowing right beside the famous Fall Creek Falls. Since it tumbles from the same cliff as Fall Creek Falls, Coon Creek Falls shares the same 256-foot height. This thinner seasonal waterfall only flows during wet seasons or following heavy rain, offering a magnificent dual-waterfall display when conditions align. The hike to the base of this waterfall is amazing, and strenuous.

What to Expect:

The overlook provides an easily accessible viewing platform that’s ideal for visitors of all mobility levels, located just steps from the parking area. To reach the base trail, walk past the main viewing platform and look for the trail entrance along the wooden fence—signage exists but can be subtle.

The descent involves navigating a challenging path composed of natural rock formations, exposed roots, mud in wet conditions, and some constructed steps. The terrain is particularly slippery near the waterfall due to constant mist and spray. Quality hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for this trek. Remember that climbing back up requires significant effort and endurance—pace yourself accordingly.

Once you reach the bottom, you can wade into the river and get remarkably close to where the water crashes down. The force of the falling water creates intense winds and heavy spray, so waterproof outerwear is recommended even if you don’t plan to swim. The rocks surrounding the pool are extremely slippery, currents can be powerful, and the wind generated by the cascade is surprisingly strong—exercise appropriate caution.
